In this presentation Dr. Chris Lima discusses the ways of teaching Shakespeare to English language learners in order to make them familiar with his plays while improving their vocabulary and language skills. She argues that working with Shakespeare’s language and exploring connections of the plays with students’ lives can contribute to learners’ enjoyment of the plays and the development of an increasing awareness of the use of the language. Examples of practical activities to use in the classroom are also provided.

About the speaker

Chris is a teacher, a teacher trainer, and a researcher. Her main interest is in the role of English literature in English language education. She is also interested in the use of new technologies in teaching and learning, especially to promote reading. Her research focuses on dialogue, teaching literature and language, and imagination in language education. She is the coordinator of the IATEFL Literature, Media & Cultural Studies Special Interest Group. She teaches at the University of Leicester.
